Beatriz Cortez Childhood Bedroom   On view from May 25 to June 8, 2013

closing reception: June 8, 8:00 to 9:30

Childhood Bedroom is a reconstruction from memory of the artist's childhood home, a place that no longer exists as she remembers it, a place that she abandoned in a haste. The model was made with foam board, wood, cloth, glue, paper, gesso, and digital photographs that recreated her childhood posters placed on the wall. The model was filled with soil, baby tears, and wheat grass seeds, and was watered and filmed on a daily basis for a period of three months until the pristine place of memory was transformed by the lush garden into a different representation of life. The video speaks about the ways in which memory is able to reconstruct a space. However, it also explores the process of forgetting as the space was abandoned and destroyed.
